INDEPENDENCE DAY

WE CAN SEE THE TWO THOREAUS ON TWO FOURTH of Julys.

On July 4, 1854, Thoreau joined abolitionists Sojourner Truth and William Lloyd Garrison for a rally to protest slavery in Framingham, Massachusetts. On the same day, nine years earlier, Thoreau had celebrated his independence by moving to his cabin on Walden Pond.
